Dia de Amor y Amistad

Because in Mexico, when your teacher says bring a small treat for your secret friend, that apparently means buy-your-friend-a-hampster.

Oh, Valentine’s Day, thank you for coming around to remind me that I am unloved this year. I mean, as if the daily reminders aren’t enough–now I get to spend the day with you! In all honesty, I didn’t even celebrate you when I was in a relationship. Now, I hate you. You stink. Thankfully, in Mexico, we call you the day of love and friendship. Thankfully, in Mexico, I have a class of lovebugs to give some attention. Thankfully, I am in Mexico…

Yesterday, as I was riding on the bus, I saw people selling all kinds of good things: balloons, flowers, oh! and coat racks. Nothing says I love you! quite like a freshly carved coat rack. Or maybe you’d like to spice up the love-of-your-life with some peanuts with chili on the way home!

In an effort to perk up, I decided today to teach my kids a love song. Unfortunantly, most of my love songs are of the moody kind. You Are My Sunshine seemed perfect! I started to sing it, and they all knew it! I sang the other part to them, but didn’t teach it. It is quite my favorite part:

I’ll always love you and make you happy,
If you will only say the same.
But if you leave me and love another,
You’ll regret it all some day:

You told me once, dear, you really loved me
And no one else could come between.
But now you’ve left me and love another;
You have shattered all of my dreams:

In all my dreams, dear, you seem to leave me
When I awake my poor heart pains.
So when you come back and make me happy
I’ll forgive you dear, I’ll take all the blame.

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are gray
You’ll never know dear, how much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away

It’s so much happier when you have 20 precious Mexicans singing them. Video

After I realized that my first class knew the song, I decided I needed to find a different one. I asked around for ideas, but it came to me like a flash.

Wild thing! You make my heart sing! You make everything groovy! Wild thing I think I love you. But I want to know for sure…

They are wild, but it is true: They make my heart sing!
